Serviceberry is a native and hardy shrub to this region. It can grow 10-20 feet tall, often bunching in a multi-stemmed form. Grows best in full sun to partial shade and a variety of soil conditions. In the spring it has white flowers, that will turn to dark red berries in late June. Birds LOVE the berries and they are perfectly edible to humans.
Hardy native shrub growing up to 20 feet tall.
Will grow in most soil types, but prefers moist soil like the edge of a swamp thicket.
Edible fruits in late June are highly desired by wildlife (and humans too for jams/jellies).
It’s dark green leaves develop into a deep red/orange color in the fall.
It has many other common names, Saskatoon and Juneberry are among them.
