Trails in Kalkaska County

If ATV’s and snowmobiles aren’t quite your thing, that’s okay. There are plenty of non-motorized trails you can explore within Kalkaska County.

The North Country Trail (NCT) is one of the longest stretches of trail in Kalkaska County. The NCT is a national trail that spans 4,500 miles over 8 states from New York to North Dakota. You can download trail maps on the NCT Association website that can be printed or downloaded to the Avenza app to take on the trail. We carry some local NCT maps in our office and can give periodic trail updates if you have an upcoming hike in the area.

There are many natural areas and preserves in Kalkaska County that are worth exploring too. Rugg Pond and Log Lake are some of our favorite county parks. Log Lake Campground and Park have a great disc golf course for visitors to enjoy. It’s even plowed in the wintertime for visitors to enjoy. Carter’s Course at the Springfield Township Park is another excellent disc golf course and hiking trail to explore.

Our partners at Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy have many preserves in the region, with a handful located in Kalkaska County. The newest preserve to join the ranks is the Upper Manistee Headwaters Preserve. At nearly 1,300 acres, it is a gem to explore. Be sure to visit their website to learn about those preserves.
