The Kalkaska Conservation District will hold its Annual Meeting from 6-8:30 pm, on Monday, November 1, 2021. The featured speaker will be Todd Feenstra, of the Midwest Water Stewards.
Todd’s presentation “Becoming A Water Steward” will provide information about area farmers and how they use science and verifiable data to conserve water while producing the crops we depend on in our daily life. Unbiased, scientific data is essential in making informed decisions about our health and the impact we make on the environment. Successful farms are vital to our local economy and the world’s food supply. Our area farmers are actively pursuing ways to increase water efficiency and monitor our water resources effectively.
Midwest Water Stewards are a group of farmers and agribusinesses who are working to protect and preserve the water resources that make the Midwest one of the most valuable and viable regions for agriculture in the world.
Fun facts about water use in Michigan:
Did you know that as much as 50% of water pumped to irrigate residential lawns is wasted? A well-designed and managed farm irrigation system can be up to 80% efficient.
Only 8% of farms in Michigan are irrigated. Our local farmers apply nearly 70% less water than irrigators in the western states.
Groundwater and surface water levels have been rising since 2013. See how local data that supports this is readily available.
In addition to this presentation, there will be dinner, a cash bar, director elections, and door prizes! You won’t want to miss this important and informative event. The meeting will be held at the Bear Lake Inn (formerly Dingman’s Bar) and tickets are $10 each for the Pasta Night dinner.
