2021 FROG WATCH

We need your ears to help us survey and listen for frogs and toads in the wetlands of Kalkaska County! Join us at dusk and be chorused by Spring Peepers and Bull Frogs for our 4th annual survey.

Those interested in participating are encouraged to pre-register before meeting us at Manistee Lake Sands Park to carpool to the 10 survey sites. With COVID19 preparedness in mind, we’re limiting this event to 10 people and asking that folks caravan (not carpool) with us to the observation sites so we can maintain social distancing. This will also allow you to exit the event early if you aren’t as much of a night owl and have other obligations.

This Citizen Science Project is organized by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. We (Kalkaska Conservation District and Au Sable Institute) decided to adopt a route to learn more about our local frog populations. Extra ears are helpful during the surveys to detect the nuisances between various frog and toad calls.

Don’t know any calls? Don’t sweat it! We have a cd that you can borrow to learn a few calls ahead of time, or we will have a crash course at the Park before we depart. The critters are nocturnal, hence why we are running the survey routes after dark. We will proceed in light rain or shine. A little rain is good! Remember where frogs and toads live…a little rain doesn’t deter them.
