Special Meeting Notice
The Kalkaska Conservation District board will hold a Special Meeting at:
6:30 p.m. on Monday, February 6, 2023, at the District office, 406 S Cedar St. Ste A, Kalkaska MI, to consider providing input to the State of Michigan regarding the proposed expansion of Camp Grayling. The meeting is open to the public.

We’re already weeks past the winter solstice, aka, the shortest day of the year. One might think that because the shortest day means less daylight hours resulting in potentially less sunlight (even in our cloudy part of the world) that would translate into the least amount of heat energy on that day. And less heat energy would result in colder temperatures, thus, as the days grow longer we would receive more heat energy per day and that would result in warmer days as the days grow longer, right?
Two Kalkaska Conservation District volunteers were honored for their outstanding service at the Michigan Association of Conservation Districts (MACD) Fall Convention held at Shanty Creek Resort on December 5, 6, and 7th.
During the winter months, amidst the piles of snow, we notice a few animals missing from the environment. Some are sleeping during the coldest days, emerging on sunny, warm days, and some are true hibernators. Other animals, such as hummingbirds, warblers and monarch butterflies are migrators, leaving the snow and cold behind for warmer climes.
The temperature is dropping, and any day now, snowflakes will be in the air. Very soon the ground will be covered. Our feathered friends could use your help!
