Tamarack, AKA American Larch, are fast-growing & deciduous trees. They’ll grow in almost any soil ( including the middle of a swamp because not much else can tolerant as wet of conditions! Tamarack will grow best in moist, well-drained soils. It’s both shade and cold tolerant, perfect for Zone 4!
Tamaracks will top out at a mature height of 40-80 feet tall and have a lovely triangle shape to them. They are deciduous and will lose their ‘needles’ after turning a brilliant yellow in the fall.
Bundles average 1-2- feet tall seedlings. It’s best to plant these by hand, they’ll be too big for mechanical planting devices.
