Calling all forest landowners! We’re hosting a special open forum to learn more about our local forests. And we need you! Whether you own 1/2 acre or 13 acres, we want to hear from you! Those that own 40 acres or more might want to consider participating in the February 19th Large Acerage Landowner Forum.
Owning and managing a small wood lot or forest can be fun and challenging! We’d love to learn what you enjoy about the woods, your successes (and failures) in land management, and discuss what emerging forest pests and diseases can affect our decisions.
We'd love to talk strategies of land management for anything from 1 acre to 40 acres! Own 40 acres or more, you might consider attending the large acreage landowner forum. We want to know what challenges there are for those working on a backyard scale to those with 3, 5, or 10 acres. Discussions will be led by the Conservation District staff and Forestry Assistance Program staff.
This forum is a follow up from a 2017 study of large forest owners' responses to threats to forest health in Kalkaska and the northern great lakes region. That study was led by Dr. Paige Fischer of the University of Michigan and she conducted a series of meetings with landowners, including the one here in Kalkaska. Many participated and we’re taking another look at the ‘state of our forests’.
